Today, DELTA Fiber and T-Mobile announced a long-term agreement under which the two providers will provide services via each other’s networks. This will give consumers more freedom of choice on the fiber network, while improved conditions on the mobile network will mean even more affordable prices. DELTA Fiber and T-Mobile believe that everyone in the Netherlands should have access to high-speed internet via mobile and cable connections. This requires an open access model for telecommunications networks with fair, wholesale rates.
With this agreement, DELTA Fiber and T-Mobile are both gaining a stronger position by using each other’s high-quality networks. Consumers are offered more freedom of choice: they can choose from both affordable cable internet options on DELTA Fiber’s fiber network and mobile services via T-Mobile’s 5G network.
Through this agreement, T-Mobile’s Internet and TV services will become available to 1.3 million households and businesses that are already connected to the DELTA Fiber network. T-Mobile will use that fiber network within the DELTA Fiber footprint. With this partnership, DELTA Fiber can expand the mobile portfolio for its customers by offering 5G, higher speeds and Unlimited data via T-Mobile’s mobile network. T-Mobile intends to use DELTA Fiber’s fiber network to accelerate the rollout of its 5G network.
DELTA Fiber wants to grow to a network with 2 million connections by 2025, which is roughly a quarter of the Netherlands. T-Mobile will add all these addresses to its fiber footprint. For this, the latest fiber optic technology (XGS-PON) is used that currently offers speeds of 2 Gbps. In the near future, speeds of 10 Gbps and in the longer term even 25 Gbps will be possible. T-Mobile will also provide services via the fiber networks that DELTA Fiber is still to roll out.
Marco Visser, CEO of DELTA Fiber: "We are very pleased to welcome T-Mobile to our brand-new fiber network. We believe in a hybrid market model with telecom providers providing services via each other’s open networks. That is the fastest and most economical way to bring fiber to everyone in the Netherlands. Double installation of fiber optic cables is neither sustainable nor necessary."
In one fell swoop, this partnership will make T-Mobile the Internet provider that can start serving most households and businesses in the Netherlands via the fiber network. T-Mobile will do this by adopting a wholesale model using the networks of various network owners. This does not only ensure affordable services; it is also a sustainable alternative.
A total of 5 million households can now purchase Internet and TV services via fiber from T-Mobile. In the coming years, the number of addresses to which T-Mobile offers services will increase even further. In the next year, T-Mobile expects to deliver services to 6 million addresses, and in the longer term, Internet and TV services via fiber will become available to virtually all Dutch households and businesses. Today, T-Mobile is already the largest provider of mobile services in the Netherlands.
T-Mobile sees this move as an important part of the further digitalization of the Netherlands. Søren Abildgaard, CEO T-Mobile Netherlands: "I am super happy with this deal. For years we have been advocating an open access model with fair wholesale rates that make it possible for everyone to enjoy high-speed Internet at affordable prices. In addition, DELTA is the first MVNO to offer Unlimited 5G to its customers and we are proud of that. By leveraging each other’s strengths, together we are setting a new standard for combined cable and mobile plans (FMC)."
